Care & Details

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent and hang to dry. Avoid fabric softener — it coats the fibres and stops muslin from softening. Skip the hot wash and the hot dryer: high temperatures are what cause shrinkage.

Muslin is a natural, slightly elastic weave, so small size variations are normal. Measurements are taken at full stretch.

What is Muslin Cotton?

A fabric with a long history

Muslin came out of ancient Bengal, where it was woven so finely that it was nicknamed "woven wind". It was light enough to pass through a ring and strong enough to outlive the person who bought it. The weave we use today is the same idea: fine cotton yarn, loosely woven, layered for substance.

Why muslin is worth it

  • Breathable by construction — the open weave moves air instead of trapping it, so it stays comfortable in a heated apartment and in August.
  • Softer every wash — muslin doesn't start at its best. The fibres relax with each cycle and the fabric keeps improving for years.
  • Gentle on skin — 100% natural cotton, hypoallergenic, and free of harsh finishes, which is why muslin is the standard for babies' skin.
  • Stronger than it looks — the layered weave resists pulls and holds its drape.
Shipping & Returns

Shipping

Shipping is free on every order to Canada, with no minimum spend. All orders are processed in 1–3 working days on average and then shipped out to anywhere in Canada.

Every order ships with a track & trace link. Parcels are declared so you should not be asked for customs duties — if you ever are, send us the receipt and we'll refund it. We currently ship to Canada only.

Returns — 100 Nights

Take 100 nights to decide. If it isn't right, email support@borealloom.com with your order number and we'll arrange a return, exchange or store credit. Returns need to be approved first and may travel to a warehouse outside Canada; return postage is yours if you've simply changed your mind, and ours if the item arrived damaged, defective or incorrect. Why Muslin for a Bib

Layered 100% muslin cotton absorbs quickly and dries between uses, which is the entire job of a bib. It's hypoallergenic and free of harsh finishes, so it's safe against the skin under a baby's chin — the spot that gets damp and stays damp. Ten colours.

THE PROCESS

How our Muslin is Made

  • Close-up of raw white cotton bolls in a shallow pale wooden bowl on a workbench.

    It starts with the boll

Natural cotton is harvested, cleaned and spun into fine, even yarn. No synthetics, no blends — just cotton.

  • Close-up of cream cotton yarn running through a loom weaving an open multi-layer muslin gauze.

    Then it gets woven

The yarn runs through looms set to an open, multi-layer muslin structure. That open gauze is where the breathability comes from.

  • Folded stacks of freshly washed cream muslin fabric on a pale wooden table in a finishing workshop.

    Washed and finished

Every piece is pre-washed, then checked by hand before it ships. Soft on arrival, softer with every wash after.

OUR STORY

Made for the warm side of the door

Boreal Loom began in Vancouver in 2019, in the middle of a long, wet winter — with one blanket, and one question: why shouldn’t everyday comfort feel this good?

Every piece since has been chosen for a moment rather than a specification. The evening on the sofa. The slow morning. The cold night that stays outside.

Because when it’s cold out there, what happens in here matters more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and hang to dry. Skip the fabric softener and the hot dryer. Muslin is one of the few fabrics that genuinely improves with washing — it gets softer every cycle.

Yes, and that's the main reason we use it. The open weave lets air move through instead of trapping it, so it cools you in summer and holds warmth in winter without ever feeling stifling. In a Canadian home that goes from -20 °C outside to overheated inside, that matters more than raw thickness.

Both are cotton, but muslin is woven in an open, multi-layer structure. That makes it breathable, hypoallergenic and gentle enough for sensitive skin and for babies. Unlike synthetics it doesn't trap heat or hold odour, it regulates temperature naturally, and it softens with age instead of pilling and breaking down. It's also free of harsh chemical finishes, which is a healthier choice for the people who actually sleep under it.

Yes — 100% natural muslin cotton, hypoallergenic, no chemical softeners or harsh finishes. Wash before first use.

Shipping is free anywhere in Canada. Orders are processed in 1–3 working days and travel for 6–10 more, so most arrive within 8 to 14 working days with a tracking link. See our Shipping Policy for the full detail.

Every Boreal Loom order is covered by our 100-Night Guarantee. Use it, wash it, live with it — and if it isn't what you reach for, email support@borealloom.com within 100 nights of delivery and we'll arrange a return, exchange or store credit.
